Davenport, IA-The final Masterworks concert of the 2009-10 season
features Norman Krieger performing Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1, as well as the ballet music of Copland and Stravinsky. These concerts will be
performed on April 10 and 11, and sponsored by Courtesy Car City and Volunteers for Symphony. Saturday evening's concert will be
at the Adler Theatre in Davenport at 8 PM and followed on Sunday
afternoon at Centennial Hall in Rock Island at 2 PM.
On Thursday night, before each Masterworks concert, Quad Citians are regularly invited to go "inside the music" with conductor Mark Russell Smith at the Figge Art Museum. Inside the Music begins with wine and cheese at 5 PM, followed by the presentation at 5:30. Expert and novice alike are sure to enjoy this casual musical conversation. This event is free to the public.
Music Director Mark Russell Smith and pianist Norman Krieger will also be available at Concert Conversations, hosted by Kai Swanson in the concert hall an hour before each of the weekend's concerts. At Concert Conversations, audience members will be given a quick tour of highlights of the program they are about to experience. This look into the background of the concert's repertoire, sponsored by Rich James of Wells Fargo Advisors, has become an audience favorite.
The Masterworks season finales with music sure to make your spirit dance. Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring was originally composed as a ballet, before the composer rearranged the work into this orchestral suite, which went on to become an American classic. The concert then vaults from our colonial countryside to the magical realm of Stravisky’s famous Firebird ballet. This concert will mark the centennial anniversary of Stravisky’s breakthrough piece. Appalachian Spring and Firebird are set around one of the most famous piano concertos of all time, performed by one of the most acclaimed pianists of this generation–Norman Krieger. Highly regarded as an artist of depth, sensitivity and virtuosic flair, Krieger regularly appears with the major orchestras of North America.
Tickets for these concerts start at $10 for Saturday night and $18 for Sunday afternoon and can be purchased in person at the QCSO Box Office, 327 Brady Street in Davenport, by phone at 800.745.3000, online at www.QCSymphony.com, and at all Ticketmaster locations.
